Years 0 to 9: Maintenance Only
If your system was installed in 2017 or later, you are in maintenance mode. Annual coil cleaning, filter changes every 60 to 90 days, capacitor checks if it is starting to short cycle. Repairs under $400 are reasonable. Replacement is almost never the right answer in this window unless a major component (compressor, coil) failed catastrophically.
Years 10 to 11: The Watch Period
This is when systems start showing their age in Texas. You may notice rising electric bills, longer run times to reach setpoint, or rooms that did not used to be hot getting hot. Repairs up to about $600 still make sense here, but start tracking them. Two repairs in 18 months is a signal that the math is shifting.
Years 12 to 14: The Tipping Point
Here is where the cost math fails. The general rule we use: if a single repair quote exceeds $800 on a 12+ year-old system, you are usually better off putting that money toward a new install. Why? Because in the Fort Worth heat, the next failure is coming within 18 months, statistically. You will be paying twice. Compressors, evaporator coils, blower motors, and circuit boards all start failing in this window. If you are getting a $1,500 compressor estimate on a 13-year-old system, the answer is replace.
Years 15 to 17: Replace Before It Dies
Every Texas summer you keep a 15+ year-old system running is a coin flip. The unit might make it through August. It might die at 4 PM on a Tuesday when it is 104 outside and every reputable contractor is booked 3 weeks out. Years 18 and Older: Borrowed Time
If your AC was installed in 2008 or earlier, you are operating on borrowed time. Beyond the failure risk, you are paying a hidden cost every month in efficiency: a 14 SEER2 system installed today uses 30 to 40 percent less electricity than the 10 SEER units of 2008. How to Find Out How Old Your System Is
Walk outside and look at the data plate on the outside unit (the metal box next to your house). Find the model number and serial number. The first 4 digits of most serial numbers encode the manufacture date. Examples:

Trane and American Standard: first 4 digits are week + year (e.g., 3214 = week 32 of 2014).

Lennox: digits 5 through 9 contain the year (e.g., serial number like 5811D29387 means 2011).

Goodman: first 6 digits are year + month (e.g., 1408XX means August 2014).
